Plattsburgh first became a town on April 4, 1785. The Town of Peru was removed in 1792, Beekmantown in 1820, Saranac in 1824 and then Schuyler Falls in 1838. It was named for Zephaniah Platt who, with 32 associates, was granted at tract of seven square miles in 1785. The first three families who settled under this grant were those of Charles Platt, Charles McCreedy and Kinner Newcomb.
