The Town of Moriah was first settled by William McKenzie (b. 1759 - d. 1815) in 1785, and established as a town in 1808. Thomas Mead was another of the first to settle. One tradition says the community was named for a district in Palestine; another says it was named for the biblical mountain on which Abraham was commanded to sacrifice Isaac. Early industry consisted of the mining and smelting or iron. The last mine closed in 19.
