The Town of Harrietstown was formed from the Town of Duane on March 19, 1841. It was named in honor of Harriet Constable, daughter of William Constable who was one of the largest landholders in Franklin County. She later became the wife of James Duane. Some of the earliest settlers who arrived in the town about 1812 were Isaac Livingston, Isaiah Flanders, William Kelly and Nehemiah White. At the end of the 19th century Harrietstown became the location for sanatoriums for the treatment of lung diseases mainly around the village of Saranac Lake.
