Fort Covington became a town on February 28, 1817, after separating from the Town of Constable. It originally included what is now the Town of Bombay. The earliest settlers were from French Canada. The town was named in honor of General Leonard Covington, who died after the Battle of Chrysler Farm in 1813. The town would have been called Covington except that there was already a Covington in the western part of the State and so "Fort" was prefixed. Some names associated with the earliest settlement of the town are; Samuel Fletcher, Aaron McLean, Ambrose Cushman, John Hunsden, David Lynch and Robert, Walter and Duncan Buchanan
