The Town of Duane was annexed from the Town of Malone on January 24, 1828. It then included the Town of Brighton and three townships of the Town of Harrietstown. The first settlement in 1824 was populated by employees of James Duane who gave the town its name. Duane married, Harriet, the daughter of William Constable, one of the largest landholders in Franklin County.
