The Town of Dickinson was formed from part of the Town of Malone on April 1, 1809. Although the town was originally slated to be called Annastown after a daughter of William Constable, it was named after General Philemon Dickinson, who was a friend of the Speaker of the House of Representatives and later Senator, Jonathan Dayton. Some of the first settlers, who came about 1810, were Jesse and Jotham Rice, Jesse and Enoch Irish, and Solomon Ross who was a soldier in the War of 1812.
