The Town of Dannemora was separated from the Town of Beekmantown on December 14, 1854. It was named
after a famous iron mining area in Sweden.  The first permanent settler was Thomas Hooker who came to the
area about 1839.  Clinton Prison was established in 1845 to exploit convict labor in the mining of iron.
