The Town of Constable, named after William Constable of the McComb Syndicate, was founded in 1807 from
part of the Town of Malone. Later its land mass was reduced by the formation of other towns - Bombay, Fort
Covington, Westville and the St. Regis Reservation. The first settlers, who were brothers-in-law, were probably
Jonathan Hapgood and Kit (Christopher) Austin, of Milton, Vermont.
