The Town of Chateaugay was established in 1799 from parts of the Town of Champlain and the Town of
Plattsburgh. All the other towns in Franklin County were spawned from it. The original settler was
Benjamin S. Roberts of Vermont about 1796.
The town takes it name from Chateaugay River which enters the St. Lawrence in what used to be the seigneury
of
Charles LeMoyne, Sieur de Longueuil,  who named it after a place he had known in France.
